Visual Rhetoric for Raspberry Shakes in Bear Lake

Just over the mountain and down into the beautiful, blue valley of Garden City, Utah an oversized ice cream cup catches the naked eye. La Beau's fast food restaurant excels at visual rhetoric by displaying something the little town of Bear Lake is most known for.

I noticed right from the beginning that the business used two different text styles and three different size fonts for the sign. The restaurant's name is using a style of font that looks to be fun, warming, and inviting. The entire text is easy to read creating less friction for the new customers to make a quick decision. Bear Lake is very well known for their famous raspberries and this restaurant takes advantage of this well known fact for advertising purposes.

“Famous Raspberry Shakes” is printed in a bold, capitalized font to indicate a statement. After learning more about visual rhetoric, I believe this is a valued advertising technique that tells others, ‘this place is famous, you need to come here.’ Another text in bold states La Beau’s is a drive-in, offering a fun, enjoyable, family-friendly atmosphere. Dating back to old times where drive-in’s were very popular and ‘famous’ connects an old time favorite to a new time memory.

By mimicking a shake cup, customers are easily drawn to this specific fast food location during a hot summer day. A white cup shape with big, red scattered dots against a bright, blue sky makes an overheated swimmer's mouth begin to water. This specific advertising mechanism is pleasing to the eye and engages the viewer to think of red raspberries and ice cream immediately.

In the eyes of a person entering a new town, a big red shake cup is easily seen and accepted. La Beau’s is giving what people are looking for, a ‘famous red raspberry’ shake. Moving from top to bottom of the image above, the rim of the cup shows emptiness indicating a delicious treat thoroughly enjoyed. Around the middle third of the image the large size of the cup is depicted and enhanced by the solid blue background showing exactness. Overall, this picture depicts what tourists come to visit the little town for, a famous red raspberry shake.
